How To Root The Motorola Moto G

This guide will show you how to root the Motorola Moto G Android phone.

What is needed to root the Motorola Moto G?

To root the Motorola Moto G you will need the following.

  • The Motorola Moto G you want to root in your hand.
  • A PC.

Step 1 – Download the PC USB drivers for the Motorola Moto G

Before we begin you need to download the USB drivers for the phone to your PC so that when you connect the Motorola Moto G to your PC to perform later steps the PC will recognize the phone.

Step 2 – Enable ADB and set up the Android SDK environment on your PC

You need to set up the Android SDK environment on your PC which you can do so by following the article here.

Step 3 – Enable USB debugging mode on the Motorola Moto G

Now that you have installed the USB drivers for the Motorola Moto G on to your PC you need to enable USB debugging mode on the phone itself so that it is recognised by your PC when you plug the Motorola Moto G to perform later steps.

You can enable USB debugging mode on the Motorola Moto G using the steps below.

  1. On the Motorola Moto G tap the Settings option.
  2. Tap the About option.
  3. On this menu tap ‘Build Number’ seven times continuously.
  4. Once you have done that go back to the Settings option.
  5. Tap the new Developer Option menu that has appeared.
  6. Make sure the USB Debugging option is checked.
  7. Tap OK to confirm.

 

Now that you have enabled USB debugging on the Motorola Moto G it is time to move on to the next step.

Step 4 – Unlock the Motorola Moto G bootloader

In order to be able to root the Motorola Moto G you need to unlock the bootloader. Once the bootloader is unlocked it allows you to then connect the Motorola Moto G to your PC and perform the rooting process.

How it works is that you have to connect the Motorola Moto G to your PC, run a command to get a unique token and then you put that in to the Motorola bootloader website and get a response back which you enter on the PC and then the Motorola Moto G will do its magic and unlock the bootloader ready for the next step.

Step 5 – Download the Motorola Moto G root program

You need a special program on your PC to root the Motorola Moto G which you can get here.

Once you have downloaded the file extract it to a folder called ‘Moto’ before continuing.

You now need to open a command prompt window on your PC and navigate to the Moto folder you just made.

Step 6 – Put the Motorola Moto G in to Bootloader mode

On the device itself you need to put it in to Bootloader mode which is done as follows:

  • Make sure the device is turned off completely.
  • Press Volume Down and the Power button at the same time and wait for the device to boot in to Bootloader mode.
  • When the device is in bootloader mode connect it to your PC.

Step 7 – Root the Motorola Moto G

Using the command prompt window you opened in step 5, make sure you have navigated to the ‘Moto’ folder that you made previously and then type the following and press Enter when done:

superboot-windows.bat

Wait for the process to be completed.

Once the device has rebooted it should now be successfully rooted.
