What do you need to root the Motorola Moto E?

In order to root the Motorola Moto E you will need the following:

  • The Motorola Moto E you wish to root in your hand
  • Access to a PC

Step 1 – Unlock the bootloader of the Motorola Moto E

Before you can root the device you must first unlock the bootloader of the device.

In order to be able to root the Motorola Moto E you need to unlock the bootloader. Once the bootloader is unlocked it allows you to then connect the Motorola Moto E to your PC and perform the rooting process.

You can start the bootloader unlock process here.

How it works is that you have to connect the Motorola Moto E to your PC, run a command to get a unique token and then you put that in to the Motorola bootloader website and get a response back which you enter on the PC and then the Motorola Moto E will do its magic and unlock the bootloader ready for the next step.

Step 2 – Download and install and set up ADB on your PC

You must download and install ADB on your PC. We show you how to do that here.

Step 3 – Copy SuperSU to the Motorola Moto E

Download SuperSU from here and save it to a convenient location on your PC such as the desktop.

Once you have done that connect the Motorola Moto E to your PC and copy the SuperSU zip file to an easy to find location on the Motorola Moto E such as the Downloads folder.

Step 4 – Install a custom recovery on the Motorola Moto E

To be able to root the device, after unlocking the bootloader and copying SuperSU to the device you must then install a custom recovery.

You can download Clockworkmod recovery from here.

Save the Clockworkmod file you downloaded to the Platform-Tools folder where you installed ADB on your PC in step 2.

You now need to boot the Motorola Moto E in to recovery mode.

To do this do the following:

  • Make sure the Motorola Moto E is powered off completely.
  • Hold down the Volume and Power button together until it boots up in to Fastboot mode.

With the device in Fastboot mode connect it to your PC.

On your PC, navigate to the Platform-Tools folder on your PC for ADB then press the Shift key and the right-mouse button to open a command prompt window.

Then type the following command and press Enter when done.

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

This will flash the custom recovery file from step 4 to the Motorola Moto E.

Step 5 – Root the Motorola Moto E

Now that the recovery mode has been flashed to the device you can disconnect it from your PC.

On the Motorola Moto E select the Recovery option to enter the recovery menu that was just flashed to the device.

Whilst the device is in recovery mode select Install zip from SD and browse to the SuperSU zip file you saved to the device from step 3.

SuperSU will be flashed to the device and then choose to reboot the device from the recovery menu.

Once the device has been rebooted the device will now be rooted and you can disconnect it from your PC.
